Course Title: Food, Family and Culture (Family and Consumer Studies- F.C.S.)
Course Description, Content & Objectives:
Food, Family and Culture (FFC) is a study of the role of families, communities and cultures. FFC includes units on culinary arts and global nutrition. Students will explore their family traditions and the history of food in American culture, tracing the ethnicity of many popular foods and customs. Students will demonstrate knowledge and respect for diverse populations by preparing meals from various cultures and countries. Working individually and in teams, they will tackle projects that include preparing recipes from many countries. Cultural and textile arts are also included. Students demonstrate job-related tasks during the careers unit. Pre-requisite= none Class length= semester
Supplies: sharpened pencil; 70-100 sheets spiral notebook (this means 140 pages for use); planner; tape or glue stick. The college ruled spiral notebook is due no later than the beginning of the SECOND WEEK OF CLASS. This spiral notebook will be used each day in class, as an Interactive FCS Notebook (IFN); the notebook will also contain a section for class recipes. Class Policies:
Grading: All work that needs grading must have a proper heading (first & last name, class title, date and period).
Students earn points by completing activities including:
*In-class Assignments *Quizzes/ Tests *Hands-On Projects
*Labs *IFN Checks *Bonus Points
The letter grade a student earns will be determined by the percentage of points they earn. Student grades are recorded in a computerized grade book and posted by student ID# on Intouch Online. Students are responsible to compare their grade recorded on Intouch Online with the grades I have recorded. Grades will reflect progress towards mastery of the FCS standards. Students' grades will be based on a proficiency scale of 1-6; 6=exceeding mastery, 4=meets the standard, and 1=no mastery of the standard. The grading scale for this class is:
A 83-100% 6/5 D 50-26% 2
B 67-82% 4 F 0-26% 1
C 51-66% 3 INC Incomplete 0
A description of the criteria regarding both the Citizenship Grade (“How I act”) and the Work Habits Grade (“How I work”) is available upon request.
Alternative assignments may be given for students demonstrating mastery of a given lesson. Assignments may be modified to address individual student needs.
Homework: Minimum weekly homework: parent/guardian review of IFN once a week with initials. Homework assignments related to specific lessons may be assigned periodically.
Late Work: Work is considered “late” if it is not turned in by the assigned date. Late work will be accepted according to school policy.
Classroom Rules, Procedures and Expectations: All rules, policies, and discipline procedures outlined in the Straub Middle School Handbook apply in this class (Including dress code, appropriate language, proper care of school equipment, etc.) Please review the Straub Rules of Conduct and Student Expectation.
